Dear Maria,
Is it a "do" or a "don't" to wear navy and black together? I have a pink blazer with navy trim and am always debating whether I can wear black pants with it!

I've never been one to abide by the sartorial rules. White after Labor
Day? Try and stop me. Bare legs in the winter? Do it all the time. Navy and black? Often and (gasp) by mixing prints and
patterns.
Navy and black is a surprisingly perfect match, and one of my favorite color combinations. The key is to choose a brighter or lighter navy to pair with black; by creating more of a contrast, you make a bigger statement. Adding a third color into the mix — like your pink blazer — helps balance the dark combination and keeps it a little more interesting. Throw in a metallic bag or shoe, and you're good to go!

This was hard for me at first too, but I now mix a lot of neutral tones. Stacey and Clinton of What Not To Wear, say it is ok to mix any neutrals in an outfit (black, camel, browns, navy, creams, grays). This winter I have found it extremely helpful as I wear my dark brown riding boots all the time, and it is like I have permission to wear them with whatever leggings or tights I want as long as they are another neutral.
ReplyDeleteErin,
DeleteI was the same way! But now, I love the two together, and I've started experimenting with other color catastrophes, like pink and orange, brown and black, and white and ivory. It's fun to break the rules. :)
Loved your post today and can't wait to try it out!

Totally agree with you on this one - and Blair is KILLING IT in that getup.
ReplyDeleteRight on, Rachael. No one does a better red lip than Blair. She owns Ruby Woo...and pretty much everything else.
